As a young man in interviewed mystics, attended séances and researched the texts of lost civilizations. He became versed in several “lost” languages including Old Lemurian which includes the oldest written records yet discovered.
To date, Abe Sapien is the world’s only amphibious humanoid. His origin is a mystery; Abe himself has no memory prior to the moment BPRD scientists woke him with electrical stimulation.
Liz Sherman was raised in Kansas City with a normal childhood until the onset of puberty at age 11. When teased by a neighborhood bully she became emotional which lead to a full manifestation of her pyrotechnic power. The resulting fire leveled a city block, killing 32 people including her family.

Kate was originally a consultant for the BPRD but Hellboy kept encouraging try some field work. She joined him on an investigation that led to a town of werewolves and her first conversation with a ghost. She joined the Bureau full time and currently acts as Assistant Director to Tom Manning.
Agent Sidney Leach, the human metal detector, is a relatively new agent. When completing his degree in mechanical engineering, he found he had the psychic ability to detect metals at a distance of several yards, even through granite blocks.
