To date, Abe Sapien is the world’s only amphibious humanoid. His origin is a mystery; Abe himself has no memory prior to the moment BPRD scientists woke him with electrical stimulation.
His inert form was found by two plumbers in the basement of St. Trinian’s Hospital in Washington DC. A note was attached to his liquid-filled tank reading, “Icthyo Sapien, April 14, 1865.” The meaning of the date remains unclear but one of the plumbers, recognizing it as the date of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, named the creature “Abe.”
He remained a victim scientific investigation until Hellboy called a halt to the research. Hellboy and Abe Sapien have been close friends ever since.
Abe began training and soon became one of the top field agents of the Bureau. Although his amphibious nature isn’t needed on most assignments, Abe is also stronger and tougher than a normal human. Ironically, many are put off by his alien appearance when Abe is actually very friendly and empathetic. He is closest to Hellboy and Liz Sherman and deeply respects Kate Corrigan and Professor Broom.
