In 1944, at Castle Drachespitze in the Rhine River Valley, RASPUTIN led the occult society, THE WOTANIC CIRCLE, in a ritual designed to bring Anung un Rama, the Ender of Worlds, to Earth. They expected a powerful demon who would release the seven dragons, the OGDRU JAHAD, to burn the world to a cinder so that a new paradise could grow.
The ritual was interrupted by a raid by American commandoes and a small team of paranormal experts including PROFESSOR TREVOR BROOM but not before a demon appeared in the form of a small child with a huge stone hand. Rasputin and some of his key followers escape while Professor Broom took charge of the baby demon who the soldiers nicknamed “Hellboy.”
Hellboy was raised by Professor Broom on an Air Force base in New Mexico. He was a rambunctious kid with a wild imagination which sometimes blurred his perception of reality. Even at an early age, Hellboy seemed to be a magnet for paranormal incidents and entities. Hellboy began to age at an accelerated rate until he reached apparent adulthood in 1951.
In 1952, the United Nations declared him a honorary human being. This event was the first proof of the paranormal for many people and led to increased funding for the BUREAU FOR PARANORMAL RESEARCH AND DEFENSE. Hellboy joined the BPRD as a field agent soon after.
Hellboy is about seven feet tall and as strong as several men but his most impressive physical trait is his ability to survive an incredible amount of punishment. He has fallen from planes, crashed through roofs, tumbled down deep shafts and been thrown through stone walls yet was able to continue fighting.
Hellboy’s right hand seems to be made of a stone-like material that is somehow flexible. Ancient texts exist which include drawings of a similar hand, referring to it as THE RIGHT HAND OF DOOM.
Hellboy is most comfortable being treated as “just one of the boys.” He resists any suggestion that he has a larger destiny that might endanger mankind although a variety of supernatural entities have suggested otherwise.
